Elijah: What’s in a name?

 

Elijah’s name (אֵלִיָּהוּ eliyahu) means, “My God, He is Yahweh.” It isn’t any wonder why in 1 Kings 18, after God showed Himself on behalf of Elijah, in contest to the prophets of baal, that the people chanted what they did….vs39…
“And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, My God, He is Yahweh; My God, He is Yahweh.”

In scripture, names containing “Yah, Yahu, or El” contain aspects of names concerning God. But any name containing Yah(u) is always a Hebrew person. Other nationalities can contain “El” (meaning God), but only Hebrew people have the Yah or Yahu in their name, for Yahweh . Elijah was a Hebrew prophet. And His name contained both El and Yahu, for “Yahweh (adonai/Lord is used in place of saying His name yhwh), My God (Eli) .”
